About 5 letter words starting with each letter
The first letter is the single most useful clue in a word puzzle, because it cuts the list of possible words more than any other position. It also varies hugely: S starts more 5 letter words than any other letter, while X starts only a handful and Q and Z fewer than a hundred each. Most 5 letter words begin with a consonant, and many begin with a consonant pair, like ST in stone, CH in chair or TR in train. Vowel openings are less common, which is why a vowel that comes back yellow in Wordle is usually better tried in the second or third spot than the first. In Wordle, open a letter's page as soon as a guess shows a green letter in the first spot. The finder on that page already has the letter in place, the everyday words are listed first, and a table shows which second letters are most likely. After a green T, for example, the TH and TR groups cover a large share of the answers, so a guess like three or track tells you a lot. The same pages work for crosswords: if you know the first letter of a five letter answer, the common list is the quickest place to look.
